How many lotions & potions do you have? If you’re anything like me you have oodles & oodles of stuff. I am a moisturizing fiend! I have face stuff, feet stuff, body & hand stuff. Did I leave a body part out? Oh, lip stuff, but that might be under face, and if I want to get precise; cleanser, exfoliator, toner, eye treatment, face serum, & lastly moisturizer – (2 kinds day & night). Stop the insanity!!!
It really is a bit much, but I can’t stand the feeling of dry scratchy skin. It gives me the heebie geebies! Especially my hands! I wash them constantly & the result leaves me with dry skin, particularly my cuticles. So when I’m not washing my hands or applying loads of lotion I’m picking at my sad little cuticles.
Imagine my delight when I heard CBS 11 is looking to do a story on dry skin using natural ingredients versus store bought products. Pick me, pick me I said to them & they did!! I was so happy to try making my own products with wonderfully natural products. I’m really getting into eating whole & natural foods, so this was right up my alley.
Your skin is your bodies largest organ so it is just as important to put good things on it as it is to put good things in it. All the lotions & creams we slather on, work their way into our bloodstream & get filtered through the liver & other organs. So lets make it easier for our bodies by giving it yummy healthy products. Products good enough to eat…
The first product/recipe I made was a hand & foot scrub. I’ve actually had a similar product used on me at different spas. It’s simply:
*2 parts organic sugar to 1 part avocado oil
*A few drops of an essential oil ( optional )
Rub onto clean hands ( dry or wet) and rinse off. It’s like wet sand & works to slough of dead skin. You’re left with really soft, hydrated skin. The oil really acts like a barrier to keep moisture in. I leave mine by the kitchen sink & use once a day or every other day.
The next thing I made was a body oil. Super simple & again only TWO ingredients. (I’ve never been able to say that, if I look at the ingredients list on ANY of my products I can barely pronounce most of them.)
*Avocado Oil ( 2-4 ounces) substitute Almond or Jojoba oil.
*Essential Oil ( a few drops ) optional, but it’s fun to experiment with new scents. Remember never put essential oils directly onto skin. They must be diluted in an oil also called a carrier.
If you’ve only ever used lotions, creams or butters, then it will just take a little getting used to, but the oils absorb quickly & leaves your skin silky soft. (Wait a minute or two for complete absorption & then dress.) I love that you don’t have to be a chemist to make many of these product recipes, it’s just simple & natural. Of course there are more complicated recipes, but these are great beginnings just to see how you like using natural products.
Two new loves on mine are Shea Butter & Coconut Oil. Delicious for your skin! I used both straight out of the jar & directly onto the skin. The Shea butter is perfect for my rough, dry cuticles because it seals in moisture & calms the rough skin so it doesn’t feel so terrible. I have also started using both the coconut oil & Shae butter on my young son who is developing a touch of eczema on his arm. It’s great to know I’m putting something safe & natural on his delicate skin.
I’ll be posting some of the more complex recipes I made in the next few days. And by complex I just mean maybe 4 ingredients instead of 2 & there might be some melting or blending, but that’s as hard as it gets. I am in love with skin products & it’s so fun to make your own!
Please share any skin care recipes you have! I’d love to try some.
